In August 2002, Gib Romaine was hired as Hood College's Director of Athletics and was the driving force in reshaping Blazer athletics.
He oversaw the College's move to coeducational status by adding eight men's sports and four women's sports to bring the total offerings to 20-more than doubling the amount at his arrival. He has also hired 13 head coaches and was been instrumental in enhancing the Blazers' athletic image. Romaine was a key player in Hood's move to the highly competitive Capital Athletic Conference beginning with select sports in the 2006-07 academic year, with the remainder joining the CAC the following year. In the Fall of 2012, he led the transition to the Middle Atlantic Conference. Romaine served as president of the Maryland Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (MACDA) from 2007-09. Additionally, he served as the vice-president of the CAC Board of Directors from January 2008-January 2010 before assuming the role of CAC president through January 2011.
In addition to Hood, Romaine held coaching and administrative positions at several institutions, including Kansas State University, the University of Maryland and Mount St. Mary's University, through the years. The Blazers won 11 Atlantic Women's Colleges Conference titles and made three NCAA Tournament appearances since 2003.Â
Romaine began his coaching career at Mansfield University and Kansas State, before moving on to the University of Maryland. He spent 24 years there, including 13 as an assistant football coach, playing a key role during a flourishing era for the Terrapins. Romaine coached Randy White, the winner of the 1974 Outland Trophy and Lombardi Award and the No. 2 overall pick in the 1975 NFL draft by the Dallas Cowboys. Working under Jerry Claiborne and Bobby Ross-for whom he served as the defensive coordinator-he helped the Terrapins go to 11 bowl games and win six Atlantic Coast Conference championships.
After his time on the sidelines, Romaine moved into the athletic administration at Maryland. Prior to coming to Hood, he served as an assistant director of athletics for development at Mount St. Mary's.
Romaine earned a master's degree in health education from Kansas State and a bachelor's degree in health and physical education from East Stroudsburg University. He is a member of the Port Jervis High School Alumni and East Stroudsburg halls of fame.
